Ability, Breadth, and Parsimony in Computational Models of Higher-Order Cognition
Computational models will play an important role in our understanding of human higher-order cognition. How can a model's contribution to this goal be evaluated? This article argues that three important aspects of a model of higher-order cognition to evaluate are (a) its ability to reason, solve problems, converse, and learn as well as people do; (b) the breadth of situations in which it can do ...
متن کاملComputational Models of Higher Cognition
Models in cognitive science span all three of Marr’s (1982) levels (see Holyoak & Morrison, Chapter 1). Normative systems (see Chater & Oaksford, Chapter 2), including the Bayesian framework (see Griffi ths et al., Chapter 3), address the level of computational theory; neural models (see Morrison & Knowlton, Chapter 6) are specifi ed at the implementation level; and informationprocessing models...

Higher-Order Computational Logic
This paper presents the case for the use of higher-order logic as a foundation for computational logic. A suitable polymorphicallytyped, higher-order logic is introduced and its syntax and proof theory briefly described. In addition, a metric space of closed terms suitable for knowledge representation purposes is presented. The approach to representing individuals is illustrated with some examp...
متن کاملExecutive Function and Higher-Order Cognition: Neuroimaging
The terms executive function and cognitive controlrefer to cognitive processes associated with the control of thought and action. Putative control functions include the ability to (1) selectively attend to relevant information while filtering out distracting information (selective attention and interference suppression), (2) work with information that is currently being held in working memory (...
